Broad strokes on the status of unity among global unions

RI is exemplary as a model of unity in spite of differences which would normally and occasionally crop up in any organization. The European Union (EU) is another global community of nations – numbering 28 member states – which has been around as a political and economic aggrupation for more than 60 years.

Lately, it has been challenged by one of its members – United Kingdom – breaking away in a move named BREXIT. A similar disunification sentiment in France called FREXIT is brewing although 60% of those polled chose to remain in the EU. A greater number at 72% of those polled in the Netherlands oppose NEXIT and would want to remain in the EU in spite of growing apprehensions over the Euro, migration and terrorism and the BREXIT split.

With over 50 years of existence, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is now looking at growing its membership with the prospective entry of Timor Leste. One challenge, though, is a common claim among four member-states over some territories at the South China Sea, compounded by China’s conflicting interest. Also, is it a point of consideration if a closer affinity of those within geographical proximity to each other and who bear religious and cultural similarities, mean better inter-relationships especially among those outside of this sphere?
